The Sport Institute of Finland has existed and evolved side by side with the development of sports and the significant events in the history of Finland. Predating the foundation of the sport institute, the idea smouldered in the thoughts of the Finnish leaders involved in the independence movement. Lauri Pihkala, Ivar Wilskman, K.E. Levälahti and Arvo Vartia were all sports men, who had a significant role in the establishment of the institute. They searched for information abroad to develop sports coaching and physical education, and to train sports leaders.
The founding of the institute was debated before Finland gained ndependence, but the civil war and the disorder that ensued postponed the opening of the institute to the end of the 1920's. The Sport Institute of Finland began its operation in 1927.
